An honors graduate of Medical University Varna, Dr. Mila Boyadzhieva has been working at the Endocrinology Clinic, St. Marina University Hospital in Varna since 2005. Trained first in Internal Medicine, she then obtained her specialty in Endocrinology in 2011, followed by her PhD in 2013, also from Medical University Varna. For her doctoral thesis, she conducted research investigating the prevalence of newly detected glucose abnormalities in patients with coronary atherosclerosis as well as determining serum levels of some newer CV markers (osteoprotegerin). She has been Associate Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at Medical University Varna since 2017.
Dr. Boyadzhieva’s clinical activities include participation on the hospital medical board for insulin treatment with CSII, as well as on the hospital multidisciplinary team for the transition of children with type 1 diabetes or a rare endocrine disease to adulthood. Her many clinical research trials focus on cardiovascular risk assessment in patients with long-lasting type 1 diabetes, the prevalence of stress hyperglycemia in patients with acute ischemic stroke, and diabetes complications. She also is a sub-investigator in many phase III clinical studies, and has authored or co-authored a number of publications. Dr. Boyadzhieva also is interested in implementing new technologies of diabetes management.
In addition to teaching undergraduate students, post-graduate and PhD students, Dr. Boyadzhieva has participated in numerous international courses. She also is a member of European Association for the Study of Diabetes and Bulgarian Society of Endocrinology.

Dr. María Riestra graduated from the Medical University of Oviedo in 2007, and completed a four-year residency in Endocrinology in 2011 at the University Central Hospital of Asturias, both in Spain. In 2018, Dr. Riestra was awarded the “First prize medical investigation in clinical medicine in Asturias.” Her clinical research projects focus on technologies in diabetes, including continuous glucose monitoring, as well as inpatient diabetes management. Author and co-author of 14 publications, she also has conducted more than 50 presentations and posters at national and international medical meetings and programs.

In addition to his work as Associate Professor of Physiology and Director of Medical Education at Karachi Institute of Medical Sciences, CMH in Karachi, Dr. Muhammad Adnan Kanpurwala is a Diabetes Specialist in a tertiary care hospital. Dr. Kanpurwala received his medical degree from Hamdard University in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2005. He has also obtained from different institutions Master’s degrees in Health Management and in Health Profession Education as well as Diplomas in Diabetes and in Statistics, along with a MPhil in Clinical Endocrine Physiology. His PhD work is on the association between vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism and complications in type 2 diabetes.
The author or co-author of over 17 papers, Dr. Kanpurwala has participated and presented research papers at many national and international forums. Research interest areas include primary care and public health, with a special focus on diabetes.
Dr. Kanpurwala has facilitated training workshops for general physicians and patients on management of diabetes and patient education, respectively. He also serves as a research supervisor and visiting faculty at different post-graduate institutes in Karachi. He has supervised more than 30 Health Management students for their Master’s thesis.
Currently vice president of the South Asian Association of Physiologists, Dr. Kanpurwala is also a member of multiple professional organizations, including the Pakistan Endocrine Society, Endocrine Society, North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society and American Diabetes Association, as well as the Pakistan Physiological Society, Physiological Society UK, American Physiological Society and International Union of Physiological Sciences.

Dr. Peter Novodvorsky recently was working as a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Lecturer in Diabetes at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Sheffield, United Kingdom. In April 2019, he returned to his home country, Slovakia, to work as a Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist at Marta Korecova Metabolic Centre in Trencin, and continue as an honorary Senior Lecturer in Diabetes at the University of Sheffield.
Dr. Novodvorsky graduated with honours (Hons) from the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2005. He completed his residency in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology, University Hospital, Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany. Dr. Novodvorsky subsequently moved to Sheffield, where he gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in London (MRCP) in 2010, and secured a Medical Research Council (MRC) clinical fellowship. This led to completion of a PhD in 2014 at the University of Sheffield, where his thesis focused on the role of transcription factor klf2a in vascular biology.
In 2014, Dr. Novodvorsky also became an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology and, subsequently in 2017, an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Diabetes. His research interests include the pathophysiology of hypoglycaemia and its contribution towards increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes. He has published several peer-reviewed papers in this area and served as a sub-investigator of several multicenter trials, including the CONCEPTT, LEXICON, PIONEER and ADDRESS-2. Dr. Novodvorsky is a member of several professional organizations, including the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Diabetes UK, Slovakian Diabetes Society and the Czech Diabetes Society.

A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona in 2003, Dr. Joana Nicolau-Ramis completed a four-year residency in Endocrinology and Nutrition in 2008 at the Hospital Clínic, also in Barcelona. Since 2009, Dr. Nicolau-Ramis has worked as Chief of Residents in Endocrinology and Nutrition at Son Llatzer University Hospital in Palma de Mallorca. She completed her PhD at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2018. Her thesis investigated the prevalence of psychopathological disorders in obesity and type 2 diabetes and their influence on metabolic control, diabetes complications and obesity treatment response. For related publications, she received the Metge Matas prize from the Balearic College of Medicine.
Her ongoing research mainly focuses on psychological aspects of diabetes and obesity as well as the improvement in quality of life and psychological features with new diabetes technologies. Author and co-author of more than 20 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Nicolau-Ramis also is a reviewer for the journals Endocrinología, Diabetes y Nutrición, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, and Acta Diabetologica. Dr. Nicolau-Ramis is an active member of the Spanish Society of Diabetes, the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition, and the Spanish Society for the Study and Treatment of Obesity.

Dr. Debmalya Sanyal graduated with honors (MBBS) from Calcutta University in 1997, followed by completion of his postgraduate diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM&H) from the School of Tropical Medicine, also at Calcutta University. His postgraduate degree (MD) in Internal Medicine was received from Utkal University, India, followed by a three-year residency and doctoral degree (DM) in Endocrinology from West Bengal University of Health Sciences in 2007. In 2010, Dr. Sanyal obtained the MRCPI from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and in 2015, received the Fellow, American College of Endocrinology (FACE) distinction.
Actively involved in clinical practice and research, Dr. Sanyal has authored or co-authored 50 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He has been involved in a number of international clinical trials. His ongoing research is focused on epidemiology and genetic aspects of diabetes and renal transplant, pharmacotherapy in diabetes and renal transplant, and renal impairment. Other areas of interest include complications in diabetes and therapy, diabetes and fatty liver, GLP-1s, type 1 diabetes, insulin and renal impairment as well as pregnancy in diabetes.
Dr. Sanyal has presented his research papers at international and national meetings, including the Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) in the United States, as well as the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), the Annual Conference of Endocrine Society of India, the South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies and the Indian Thyroid Society Conference. He has been an invited speaker at many conferences, such as the 2013 Asia Pacific Diabetes Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Awards include Best Paper Presentation at the Eastern Zone Endocrine Conference in 2006, and the Indian Medical Association’s Dr Deepak Banerjee Award for best paper published in the Journal of Indian Medical Association in 2009. Dr. Sanyal also was selected for travel grants for paper presentations at AACE. He was a member of the Scientific Committee for the Endocrine Society (India) 2012 conference.
In addition to serving as a doctoral (DNB) thesis co-guide on new onset of diabetes after kidney transplant (NODAT), Dr. Sanyal is Secretary of the Diabetic Association of India (WB Chapter) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Endocrine Society of Bengal. Additionally, Dr. Sanyal is a Fellow of AACE and a member of the Endocrine Society (USA & India) and RSSDI.
