Richard M. Bergenstal, MD, is an endocrinologist and Executive Director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet. He is Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and served as President, Science & Medicine of the American Diabetes Association in 2010. In 2007, Dr. Bergenstal was named the ADA’s Outstanding Physician Clinician of the Year and in 2010 he was awarded the Banting Medal for Service for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Bergenstal received his MD and endocrine training from the University of Chicago where he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine before joining the International Diabetes Center in 1983. His clinical research has focused on glucose control and diabetes complications and he has served as a Principal Investigator of five NIH trials: the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) in type 1 diabetes and the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risks in Diabetes (ACCORD) study and the Glycemic Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) study in type 2 diabetes and 2 technology focused NIH grants (Hygieia – study of insulin dose advisor system, Artificial Pancreas grant to study next generation automated insulin delivery systems).
Dr. Bergenstal’ s clinical efforts have been directed toward improving systems of care for patients with diabetes by translating new research findings into practice. He studies the effective utilization of insulin therapy and standardization glucose monitoring (SMBG and CGM) to improve glucose control and clinical outcomes. He teaches nationally and internationally on the importance of patient‐centered team care, has been listed in Best Doctors in America since it began in 1992, has published over 250 peer reviewed scientific articles in diabetes.

Anders L. Carlson, MD, is a Medical Director with the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet in Minneapolis, MN, and an endocrinologist at HealthPartners and Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. He also serves as the Director of the Diabetes Program for HealthPartners as well as the Medical Director of the Stillwater Medical Group Diabetes Program. He is an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School and is active in teaching medical students, residents and fellows. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Dr. Carlson received his MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his internal medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He trained in endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT.
His current research efforts are centered on diabetes technology, prevention and education. He is a principal investigator on several clinical trials looking at new diabetes therapeutics as well as devices such as hybrid closed-loop insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems. In conjunction with the team at IDC, he has published several articles about glucose data interpretation and use of the Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP). In partnership with the Center for Memory and Aging at the HealthPartners Institute, he is leading a project exploring the role of intranasal insulin in hypoglycemia awareness in type 1 diabetes. He serves as an investigator on several large NIH trials including EDIC, GRADE and FLAIR. He is also participating in several quality improvement projects including the use of continuous glucose monitoring in cancer patients receiving glucocorticoids and a telehealth program with primary care, and is active with many of the teaching and publication programs within the International Diabetes Center.
Amy Criego, MD, MS

Amy Criego MD, MS is currently the Department Chair in Pediatric Endocrinology at Park Nicollet Clinic and is a Medical Director at the International Diabetes Center (IDC). She attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of North Dakota. She underwent residency training in Pediatrics at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI and completed her fellowship training in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Minnesota in 2005 where she also obtained her Master of Science in Clinical Research.
Dr. Criego is primary investigator for the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange and is the primary investigator and sub-investigator in medical device studies and new therapies for diabetes management at the IDC. She has been involved with the collaboration between the International Diabetes Center and Melrose Institute helping to improve care for patients with eating disorders and diabetes. She provides clinical care to children, adolescents and young adults with diabetes and other endocrine disorders.
Dr. Criego has been active in the American Diabetes Association having participated in the Scientific Sessions Planning Committee for 2012 and 2013 and has volunteered for the medical staff and as Medical Director for the America Diabetes Association sponsored camp for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Danne is the Director of the Department of General Pediatrics Endocrinology/Diabetology & Clinical Research at the “Auf der Bult” Hospital for Children and Adolescents, Hannover Medical School, Germany, which is the largest pediatric diabetes center in Germany. Presently he is appointed as Chairman of the SWEET-project (www.sweet-project.eu) and work-package leader of the INNODIA-project (www.innodia.eu). He is the Past-President of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), the German Diabetes Association (DDG) and the German Diabetes Aid (diabetesDE). He is a former Research Fellow of the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard Medical School in Boston. His research interests include basic and clinical research in diabetology with special emphasis on type 1 diabetes treatment, new insulins, insulin pumps, glucose sensors and the artificial pancreas. Recently he has been awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award” of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Dr. Danne has published over 200 peer reviewed papers is on the Editorial board of several journals and has contributed to several books.

Sandeep R. Das, MD, MPH, MBA is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Cardiology Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and Director of Acute Coronary Care at Parkland Health & Hospital System. He serves as a Health System Quality Officer for UT Southwestern and is a founding member of the Parkland Center for Healthcare Innovation and Clinical Outcomes. Dr. Das graduated from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, then went on to complete an Internal Medicine Residency and earn his Master of Public Health degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, followed by cardiology fellowship at UT Southwestern. After completing his training, he joined the faculty at UT Southwestern in 2007. He recently completed an MBA in 2018 from the combined UT Southwestern-UT Dallas program. Dr. Das currently balances his time between patient care, research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. His primary research interest is on safety, outcomes, and quality of care among the urban poor, and he is a prior winner of the Parmley Prize for Outstanding Manuscript by a Young Investigator in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Das is an Associate Editor for Circulation, a leading cardiology journal, and represents the American College of Cardiology (ACC) on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care. He co-chaired the recent ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on Novel Therapies for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.

Ian de Boer, MD, MS

Dr. de Boer is Professor of Medicine, Associate Director of the Kidney Research Institute, and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He is a staff nephrologist at the Puget Sound Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, where he cares for patients with a broad range of acute and chronic kidney diseases. Dr. de Boer’s research focuses on the causes and consequences of diabetic kidney disease, with additional interests in vitamin D metabolism in chronic kidney disease. His epidemiology work has helped define the clinical course of kidney disease in types 1 and 2 diabetes, including prevalence, incidence, risk factors, outcomes, relationships with cardiovascular disease, and the impact of diabetes treatments. Additional work employs patient-oriented physiology research and clinical trials. He has published over 280 manuscripts in the areas of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Dr. de Boer has also helped translate research to clinical care through clinical practice guidelines, including the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes (as a member of the ADA Professional Practice Committee) and the KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline on Diabetes and CKD (as Co-Chair). He serves as the Deputy Editor of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Professor David Owens, CBE, MD, FRCP, FIBIOL

Professor Owens has been involved in the management of diabetes and related research activities for more than 35 years. His primary interests include the evolution of glucose intolerance and pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes including new and emerging therapies. He also has a keen interest in all micro‐vascular complications of diabetes especially diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy and introduced the first community wide National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service for Wales as its Director and Clinical Lead from its establishment in 2002 up to 2007. With his interest in research activities, he was proud to have been the inaugural Chairperson for the Diabetes Research Network in Wales in 2005. He continues to support research activities in the area of diabetic retinopathy and the natural history of diabetes and has supervised many MD, PhD and MSc students over the years.
His commitment to education led to the development of the Post Graduate Diploma course in Diabetes launched over 3 years ago and he continues to encourage health professionals from all over the world to continue their education in this field. Professor Owens has published over 300 peer‐reviewed papers, in addition to reviews and book chapters. His early work regarding insulin was published as a single author book on Human Insulin in 1986 based on his research on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of subcutaneously administered insulins. Professor Owens is a member of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Institute of Biology. His opinion has been sought by numerous diabetes‐related advisory boards for both UK and International governmental organizations. In 2002 Professor Owens was awarded the CBE for his services to diabetes and the National Health Service. In 2018 Professor Owens was awarded the Excellence in Patient Care International Award from the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK.

Gregg D. Simonson, PhD

Gregg D. Simonson, PhD, is currently the Director, Professional Training and Consulting at International Diabetes Center. He also holds an academic appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Practice and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Simonson earned his doctorate in molecular cell biology and biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. He held a post-doctoral research position at the University of Wisconsin Children’s Diabetes Center and was awarded a Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship for his research on diabetes gene therapy. Dr. Simonson currently oversees professional training and consulting at International Diabetes Center and is responsible for the development and delivery of continuing medical education programs for more than 1,000 health professionals annually to broaden their knowledge and practice of optimal management of diabetes. In addition, he oversees IDC Publishing, which offers educational resources for individuals with diabetes and the health professionals who serve them. His research interests include translation of evidence-based medicine into clinical practice through creation of algorithms and practice guidelines.
Dr. Simonson is a member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Minnesota Department of Health Diabetes Steering Committee, having served as chair. He was the recipient of the 2015 Bruce Zimmerman Diabetes Award by the Minnesota Department of Health for leadership in promoting diabetes care, education and prevention. He has authored many original articles published in peerreviewed journals and has presented abstracts of his research at numerous national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Simonson is a coauthor of Staged Diabetes Management (SDM), an evidencebased systematic approach for detecting and treating diabetes and its complications and numerous IDC patient education materials. He leads IDC Consulting Team and is actively involved in guiding healthcare organizations on diabetes quality improvement. He is also the lead trainer/facilitator of SDM program implementation in tribal communities, federally qualified health agencies, medical groups and integrated health care systems nationally and internationally.

Professor Carol H. Wysham

Carol H. Wysham, MD is an endocrinologist at the Rockwood Clinic/Multicare Health Systems in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Wysham attended the University of Iowa for her medical degree and endocrine training. She then served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota before joining the Rockwood Clinic in 1992. Her clinical research interests have focused on novel treatments for type 2 diabetes and the prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes. She has served as a Principal Investigator for several trials, including ADOPT, ACCORD, TECOS, AIMHIGH, EMPA-REG, LEADER and CANVAS.
Dr. Wysham’s clinical efforts have focused on improving the delivery of care for patients with diabetes, including acting as director of the CDC funded Washington State Diabetes Collaborative and as an educator of medical students and residents on how to use guidelines in practice to improve outcomes for patients with diabetes.
